da dobrowin: Manchester United’s win over Liverpool last weekend was absolutely crucial.
da betcris: Whilst it wasn’t the goal-packed, top-of-the-table clash we are so used to, it was a massive result for Louis van Gaal’s side and one that certainly took the pressure of the Dutchman’s shoulders.
But away from the pitch, there was another headline-grabbing incident that, as a football fan, was so refreshing to see.
The link between modern-day footballers and supporters is somewhat misconstrued, with many fans feeling there is too much of a barrier between them and their heroes.

So when the sky cameras showed Marcus Rojo, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones in the away end with the United fans, it brought a sense of family back to football.
These players are superstars, and some of the most famous faces on the pitch and it was strange seeing them up-close and personal with the supporters.
But I bet the fans appreciated it so much and saw it as a very welcoming gesture.
They could have gone straight into executive seats but instead they chose to socialise with their supporters, who dig into their pockets on a weekly basis to watch them play.
And Jones in particular was buzzing to see Wayne Rooney’s late goal seal a 1-0 victory – there were some great shots of him celebrating with the rest of the United faithful.
The England defender was supposedly nursing an ankle injury, but he showed no sign of pain as he jumped and celebrated with United’s travelling faithful.
It’s something we very rarely see and it was very cool to see a proper connection between supporters and players. We often hear old tales of players getting the bus back from the games with fans back in the 60’s but the division has deepened as the years have gone on, and arguably as the money has increased in the game.
There was also some fantastic reactions on social media, with some fans buzzing to have had the chance to celebrate with their players. My favourite was “When that went in I jumped straight onto Rojo’s back. His minder: ‘Get off! He’s had shoulder surgery!’ That’s him out for another month!”
So yeah, that’s Rojo out for another month then!
But seriously, more players should follow the example set by United’s trio last weekend. As football fans, we’ve had the opportunity to interact with players on both sides of the spectrum. They are normal people and the majority of the time they do put in 100% and do care about the club and the fans that support them.
More could be done to increase interaction with players and fans, rather than predictable shirt-signing sessions you get at the club shop once a year.
It’s the clubs’ responsibility to make sure there is a bridge between the people that fund the club and its players. Fair play to United for letting this happen, and let’s hope we see more of it in the future.
