Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been speaking to the media ahead of his side’s trip to Brighton on Saturday, specifically about the form of summer signing Che Adams.
The 23-year-old, who was signed from Birmingham for £15m, is yet to open his account for the Saints in a competitive fixture, despite netting three times throughout pre-season.
Adams certainly knows where the goal is though, having scored 22 goals for Birmingham last term in the Championship.
What did he say?
Hasenhuttl told The Daily Echo: “It’s normal you need a little bit of time to adapt to Premier League football but he has all the things he needs and that’s why I’m very positive with him and his teammates like him very much.
“He is physically very strong and quick, he has a good finish, knows where he can get chances and this is a good package.
“The guys like him and how he works for the team as a calm and positive guy who fits perfect for the team.”
Hasenhuttl spot on in backing Adams
Hasenhuttl is entirely right to give the English striker his backing – we are just two games into the season, after all – and just why Adams’ form is even being discussed so soon is baffling.
Jamie Vardy hasn’t scored a league goal yet either. Neither have Raul Jimenez or Diogo Jota. Callum Wilson is also yet to score. West Ham’s Sebastien Haller, a man who cost £30m more than Adams, is also yet to grab a goal.
Adams has never played at this level before – it would extremely harsh to judge him so soon and Hasenhuttl is spot on to give the Southampton No.10 his backing. A little faith could lead to a lot of goals if the striker’s Championship form last season is anything to go by.
