Tottenham Hotspur made it eight months without an away win in the Premier League following their 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday, and surely manager Mauricio Pochettino can’t afford to ignore midfielder Eric Dier any longer.
The England international is yet to play a single minute of football for Spurs so far this season despite being available for all but one of their fixtures in all competitions, appearing as an unused substitute in every one.
The north London outfit are yet to win on their travels this term and the weekend was another example of them surrendering a lead to drop points – the loss came just days after they led 2-0 against Olympiacos and drew 2-2.
It is becoming blatantly obvious that a midfield combination of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko, or Winks, Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele, isn’t providing the required protection the backline needs away from home.
The side is missing that disciplined defensive midfielder who will bring some bite and shield the defence, and Dier is the obvious option.
Yet, when Pochettino looked to shore things up at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, he brought on Victor Wanyama instead of the man rated at £27m by Transfermarkt.
This was a Wanyama Tottenham wanted to offload during the summer, before a move to Club Brugge collapsed.
Here he was making his first appearance of the campaign ahead of Dier though, and it proved to be a disastrous decision as the Kenyan international was partly at fault for both of Leicester’s goals.
Looking back to last season, the Englishman may have featured in the away defeats against Southampton, Manchester City and Bournemouth – where he was particularly poor and hooked at half-time – in the latter stages of the campaign, but he also came on in their previous away league win against Fulham in January, when the scoreline was 1-1.
Prior to that in 2018/19, he played in the middle of the park in victories on the road against Newcastle United, Manchester United, Brighton, Huddersfield Town, West Ham and Leicester – surely no coincidence?

Given where Tottenham find themselves now, Pochettino simply can’t afford to ignore Dier anymore, and he needs to find a system that fits the 25-year-old in as a defensive midfielder to try and stop the cheap goals they keep conceding.
One or even two of Winks, Sissoko and Ndombele may have to be sacrificed, but it needs to happen now for the good of the club.
