da betway: Danny Mills thinks Cenk Tosun would be a suitable addition for Leeds should they need to sign a striker in January.
What did he say?
da pixbet: A lot has been made about possible incomings at Elland Road in January though given their promotion challenge could depend on the window, it is understandable that there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the club.
Eddie Nketiah’s future is still no closer to being resolved with fears that Arsenal could recall the 20-year-old due to his lack of game time, and the fact he is still yet to start a league game for the club.
Phil Hay has proposed that Everton’s Cenk Tosun could be a possible target of the club if the finances are there for such a deal, and Mills has weighed in with his opinion on the Toffees striker.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Whites’ player said:
“I think he’s not been prolific at Everton but we have seen he is hard-working, diligent, obviously got quality, maybe not quite enough for the Premier League.
“But he could be an ideal replacement, as he has experience, if Nketiah goes back to Arsenal.”
It makes sense to bring in another striker if Nketiah departs, and Tosun has some promising attributes that would certainly serve him well in the Championship, and he could be eager to play after missing so much of the season.
Difference in attack
One of the biggest positives about having Nketiah in the squad is that he is a very different alternative to Patrick Bamford, and therefore he offers variety to the Leeds attack.
His pace and movement, combined with his skilful finishing, makes him a handful for most opponents and a player that is difficult to track, which is a nightmare for defences late on in matches after dealing with the more physical Bamford.
Tosun too would add a different dimension to the attack, and therefore Mills is right to suggest he would be a good replacement for the youngster.
The Turkey international may have found game time difficult to come by but there is a reason Everton paid £27m for him, and if used right he could rediscover his best form – Marcelo Bielsa could be just the man to allow that.
He has improved Bamford’s all-round game markedly and would likely seek to play to Tosun’s strengths too. The Toffees player would be perfect to bring on late in matches and make sure the ball stays up-front, whether Leeds are winning or losing.
He has one goal this term, a bullet header scored late on against Tottenham a few weeks ago, a strike which underlined the impact he can have from the bench, and the bullish nature he adopts in the box.
Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?
As Mills alludes to, he is also hard-working and such an attitude fits perfectly into the team. It would mean the Whites wouldn’t lose a defensive edge when Bamford gets subbed off, as they did against Cardiff on Saturday when they conceded three in the final 30 minutes.
Furthermore, some fans are beginning to grow impatient with Nketiah and wouldn’t mind if he did leave, and therefore they could welcome the fresh addition of Tosun.
